Fiona Fenn

What inspired you to become a writer?
Like most writers, I’ve been putting my imagination into words since I was little. It’s what I’ve always been compelled to do. My mom loves to tell a story about when my 2^nd grade teacher told her: “Fiona is a great student but sometimes she goes somewhere inside her head. I want to know where she goes, she seems very happy there.” Writing is my attempt to share those worlds I escape to.

Favorite genre?
Fantasy. Unapologetically. Add in a strong romantic subplot with a morally-gray MC and I am hooked.

Which novels made you fall in love with writing?
Some old, some new, I’m constantly re-falling in love: ANIMORPHS by KA Applegate, THE DARKANGEL TRILOGY by Meredith Ann Pierce, Tanith Lee’s entire body of work, SABRIEL by Garth Nix, THE GOBLIN EMPEROR by Katherine Addison, and THE SCHOLOMANCE SERIES by Naomi Novik.

What is your writing routine?
Wake up early, make a cup of coffee, light a candle, then get to work for a couple hours while the world is still quiet. Either that or speed-drafting at work between tasks.

Where would you want to travel if you had to stay there a year?
Norway, hands down. A little village tucked into a fjord. There’s something about the mountains, the pine trees, the cold, and all that wild nature that my soul will never get enough of.

If you were a mythological creature, what would you be?
Are you actually making me choose between a vampire and a werewolf? Fine. A big bad Werewolf, but only because I want the angsty victorian vamp as my love interest!
